Chiropractic
One of the largest primary care professions in Ontario, chiropractic is an evidence-informed, non-invasive, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the musculoskeletal system.
Chiropractors practice primarily using their hands, providing diagnosis and treatment for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, nervous system and joints.
Chiropractors use a combination of treatments, depending on the specific needs of the individual patient. After taking a history, performing an examination and establishing a diagnosis, a chiropractor can develop and carry out a comprehensive treatment/management plan. Some of the common therapies include but are not limited to: adjustment, acupuncture, interferential current (IFC), Ultrasound, Graston, laser, shockwave, soft tissue therapy (ART), taping and therapeutic rehabilitative exercises.
For many conditions, such as low back pain, chiropractic care is the primary method of treatment. When a multi-disciplinary approach is advisable, a chiropractor will coordinate care with other health care professionals. Where other conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical or other treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition.
Chiropractic care may also be used to provide symptomatic relief for patients with chronic conditions.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is a healthcare treatment focused on improving movement, managing pain, and restoring function through manual therapy, exercise, and education. It is used to treat a wide range of conditions, from musculoskeletal injuries to neurological disorders, and can help people of all ages.
Physiotherapy is helpful because it addresses the root cause of physical problems rather than just masking symptoms. It offers personalized treatment plans that include exercises to strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and enhance overall mobility. It also helps reduce pain through techniques like manual therapy, massage, and modalities such as heat or cold therapy.
Whether recovering from surgery, managing chronic conditions like arthritis, or preventing future injuries, physiotherapy promotes faster recovery, increases functional independence, and improves quality of life. By focusing on prevention and rehabilitation, physiotherapy helps people return to their daily activities safely and with reduced pain.
Massage Therapy
While there seems to be universal agreement that registered massage therapy “feels good”, it also offers many specific benefits. The therapeutic use of massage affects the circulatory, muscular, fascial and nervous systems. Registered massage therapy is also effective in the control of pain – both chronic and acute, in stress reduction and in creating a sense of relaxation and well being.
Many effects are preventative in nature. When muscles are loose and circulation is sufficient, the result is better health and less chance of injury or dysfunction. Some other effects are not well understood, such as decreased anxiety following treatment. Some physical and psychological effects may be due to the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.
A trained massage therapist focuses on the normalization of the soft tissues affected by stress, injury and illness through the use of manual techniques that improve circulation, enhance muscular relaxation, relieve pain, reduce stress, enhance immune function or promote health and well-being.
You don’t need to be injured or in pain to experience registered massage therapy, it can be used as a tool to help facilitate your general well being. Many people seek massage therapy regularly to help them perform at their best and feel positive about themselves.
TCM Acupuncture
A traditional Chinese acupuncturist will do a very comprehensive history/physical examination and make a diagnosis based on complex theories regarding disturbance in the body’s balance (energy) that need to be addressed with treatment.
This traditional form of acupuncture involves the use of small needles inserted at specific points on the body that are aimed to help to regulate the flow of energy or Qi. Dysregulation of this energy in the body is stated to be at the root of all ailments and disease. By regulating the state of Qi with the needles, traditional acupuncturists aim to help guide the body back into homeostasis.
Traditional Chinese acupuncture has been around for more than 2500 years and has produced positive results for centuries.
